Overview

The most popular way to truly experience the Sumatran tropical rainforest is by taking an overnight stay in Leuser National Park. This trek offers an authentic jungle experience, allowing you to connect deeply with nature.

Day 1

After breakfast, Our guide will pick you up at 8.30am from your guesthouse/hotel in Bukit Lawang and you will start your journey into the jungle of Gunung Leuser National Park to see wild orangutans. On the trek, our guide will educate you on the local wildlife, flora and fauna you may encounter in Gunung Leuser.

 

After lunch, continue the trek to see other wildlife such as the Thomas’ leaf monkey, white-handed gibbon, black gibbon, long-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, hornbills, peacocks, monitor lizards and learn about the trees/plants which can be used in traditional medicine.



 

Late afternoon-Our guide will select a suitable spot next to the river to set-up camp. You are then free to enjoy the fresh water of the  river, swim, help prepare dinner, or even go fishing.
 


Sumatra orangutan trek

After dinner, when the weather is good, our team will prepare a bonfire and the guides will entertain you with their jungle skills, games and songs before you settle down to sleep surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and river.

Day 2

Continue the jungle adventure, spotting wildlife. After 2-3 hours, our guide will take you to a waterfall where you can swim and relax.

 

After lunch, you will leave the campsite by traditional rafting boat (‘jungle style’) following the river downstream to the village of Bukit Lawang.

day 1-lunch (Friedrice with veg, egg, chicken and fruit), dinner (Rice, veg curry, chicken rendang, sambal tempe/tofu, perkedel and fried egg/omlette)

day 2-breakfast (Tost with friedegg and cheese/pancake), lunch (Friednoodle/noodle soup and fruit)

Drinks/Snack

Each guest receives a 1.5L bottle of water (refillable at the camp with boiled water). Tea, coffee, or hot ginger with snacks are provided during leisure time at the camp

Return

Rafting back by traditional tube to Bukit Lawang village

Permit entrance to the Gunung Leuser National Park, camera tax 10 Euros/ person for normal day and 13 Euros/ person in Sundays or red days, payable to the national park office)

What to bring

  • Small backpack with a change of clothes, raincoat, swimwear, small towel, small pillow, personal items, toilet paper, medicines, camera + spare battery + memory card (in a waterproof bag), insect repellent, sunblock, torch, plastic bag (for wet clothes), sandals/flip flops (for walking around the camp).

  • Luggage should ideally be under 10kg.

  • Comfortable clothing; long sleeves/trousers optional as there are few mosquitos. Nights can be cold in the jungle.

  • Waterproof shoes with good grip/tread for slippery paths.
